Managing Nicotine Dependence & Quitting

Am I too late to quit smoking?

It's never too late to quit smoking. Quitting smoking can provide immediate and long-term health benefits, regardless of how long you've been smoking.

Is nicotine addictive?

Yes, nicotine is a highly addictive substance, and when a person smokes tobacco, many parts of the body get used to having nicotine in them. When first quitting, the body goes into withdrawal, making the quitting process challenging to manage with willpower alone. If you choose to quit smoking with Nicotine Replacement Therapy you should aim to gradually reduce and aim to be completely nicotine free.

What treatments are available to help me quit?

First Line Smoking Cessation Aids

Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRTs): NRTs are approved therapies and widely endorsed methods to quit smoking. These products deliver controlled doses of nicotine to alleviate withdrawal symptoms while gradually reducing dependence. Common NRTs include nicotine patches, gum, lozenges, inhalers, and nasal sprays. They are available over-the-counter at pharmacies and supermarkets.
Prescription Medications: Certain prescription medications, can aid smoking cessation by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms. These medications work by targeting nicotine receptors in the brain, helping to curb the urge to smoke. Consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary to obtain a prescription and monitor potential side effects.

Second Line Smoking Cessation Aids
Nicotine Vaping Products: Starting from October 1st, 2021, nicotine vaping products have been classified as second-line treatment for the 70% of Australian smokers who have attempted to quit using first-line therapies without success. Suppliers are required to meet minimum standards of product manufacturing and quality by adhering to TGO110 - Standard for Therapeutic Vaping Goods. Additionally, supplying these products under medical supervision ensures that they are not easily accessible to youth and non-users, as these products carry potential risks and are not considered risk-free.

Is vaping illegal in Australia?

Vaping is not illegal in Australia, but its regulation has changed. As of July 1, 2024, vapes can only be sold in pharmacies. People 18 and older can buy vapes with ≤20 mg/mL nicotine without a prescription from October 1, 2024.

Is vaping effective to help me quit?

While vaping is considered a safer alternative to smoking, it still involves certain risks. Vaping is a relatively new technology, and scientists are still monitoring the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes and vaping products. Inhaling nicotine from a solution rather than by burning tobacco produces less harmful substances than cigarette smoke, however, it's important for people to know that there are risks associated with inhaling some of the active ingredients used in nicotine products such as flavouring. TGO 110 sets out several requirements relating to the ingredients used in nicotine vaping products, that's why it's important to source your products from a trusted source. This is why we don't encourage patients to adopt vaping as a long-term habit but use it as a tool to assist with your quit smoking journey. By gradually reducing your nicotine intake, the therapy allows your body to overcome the cravings and withdrawal symptoms until you are ready to quit once and for all, and minimize the chance of relapsing.

What’s the difference between Nicotine Salt and Freebase?

Nicotine freebase is the purest form and original form of nicotine. For a long time, freebase nicotine was the only nicotine available for vaping, however, it can be very harsh inhaled in high doses. Salt nicotine allows a much smoother draw due to the addition of benzoic acid. Benzoic acid lowers the PH level of the mix bringing it closer to neutral and making it more comfortable to inhale. Nic Salt absorbs faster into our bodies allowing to use higher nicotine strengths without the rough throat hit.
